A specialist in large pelagics, tuna, marine mammals, sustainable fisheries, sustainable use of resources and scientific ethics, he has a background in marine species systematics, seabed biocenosis, protection of aquatic ecosystems, protected areas and sustainable use of aquatic resources in the global arena. He has designed several marine protected areas in Italy and abroad, then implemented by various governments. He has been involved in international aquatic resource management for years and coordinates, together with a small team of international lawyers, the proposals for the Chart of Ocean Rights. He has published about 350 scientific papers and books, and more than 80 technical and scientific reports, published in various countries. He has been a lecturer in various masters and graduate courses (Bocconi University, University of Bologna, University of Heidelberg, University of Zaragoza, University of Santiago de Compostela, University of Barcelona). He has given hundreds of lectures in many countries and universities around the world. He has worked and operated so far in 66 countries, often as a project manager. He has been and is coordinator of international scientific and cultural projects of high value and has taken on the role of national coordinator in Italian and EU projects on several occasions. He has represented the Italian government or the European Commission many times as an expert in international meetings and the Government of Sweden at the UN Ocean Conference in 2022. His work experience includes a number of international or supranational organizations (UN, FAO, UNESCO, UNECE, ICCAT, GFCM, IOTC, IWC, IUCN, OSPAR, NATO, and CIESM). In December 2016, he was awarded the honor of Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia by the President of the Italian Republic for high scientific merits abroad and for spreading Italian scientific culture. He has received numerous international prizes and awards for scientific activity in the field of marine biology and conservation, including the Tridente d'Oro, the highest international career award for studies and works concerning marine and underwater biology. In 2018, the Peloritan Academy of Periculants of the University of Messina awarded him Magister Peloritanus for scientific activity abroad. He was also named an honorary "Rais" (Arraez) by the General Assembly of Rais and Vicerais (Arraez y Sotarraez) in 2013. In 2022 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Cultural Merit by the Real Liga Naval Española. For literature, he won the City of Gaeta International Literary Award in 2010 (first work), was (with two books) among the finalists of the Sanremo Sea Book Award in 2011, won the second prize of the 2019 edition of the Sea Culture Literary Award in San Felice Circeo, and a book he co-authored won the "Best Sustainable Cookbook" award at the 2013 Gourmands World Cookbook Awards in Hong Kong. He has collaborated on numerous nature documentaries and television broadcasts in Italy (RAI, Mediaset) and abroad (BBC, Anglia). He has participated as an expert and for over 30 years in several TV shows such as Linea Blu, Maurizio Costanzo Show, L'Arca di Noè, Geo&Geo, Planet of Wonders, Uno Mattina, Focus Live, etc., always on issues of sustainable use of marine resources and environmental protection. He has written hundreds of journalistic articles for La Gazzetta del Sud, Il Soldo, La Nuova Sardegna and Il Secolo XIX. Since 2019, he has been Chief Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the international newsletter of scientific criticism and ethics "Wastepaper-Cartastraccia."
