Great success for the events from 1 to 6 October: Jeanslab between creativity, tradition and innovation
From 1 to 6 October 2024, Jeanslab proposed a series of special events, on the occasion of the first edition of Genoa Jeans Week, which made it the protagonist of the week dedicated to jeans and its hometown.
The appointments, which registered an extraordinary participation, showed once again how jeans fabric is a symbol of creativity and innovation, respecting a tradition deeply rooted in the city of Genoa.
The week saw the holding of 7 workshops, each of which hosted 20 participants for a total of 140 people, guaranteeing effective participation thanks to limited places.
The workshop was visited by about 100 people per day, for a total of 600 visitors over the week, with peaks during the weekend bringing the total number of guests to 700-800.
The week opened on Tuesday 1 October with the workshop Cyanotypes on Jeans, a creative path curated by Michele Luigi Mulas, assisted by Cinzia Rojas and Gianmaria De Luca. The workshop, linked to the BluJanua project – Italian Photography in Cyanotype, also curated by Michele Luigi Mulas – offered participants the opportunity to experiment with this technique on fabric, exploring new ways of transforming jeans into works of art.
The afternoon then witnessed a fascinating encounter between art and science with Cyanotype and Algae, a workshop led by Valentina Asnaghi, a researcher in Restoration Ecology at the University of Genoa, who showed how seaweeds, natural elements that are the subject of her own studies, can blend harmoniously with artistic creativity.
Wednesday 2 October was the turn of designer Johanna Wahl, who led the first part of the combined workshop of JOLAB – art&textile design and RACINE Fashion Design Project by Eden Embafrash.
With the first workshop, entitled Printing on Jeans, Johanna Wahl involved the participants in using the ancient technique of blockprinting, to decorate remnants of denim fabric with wooden moulds.
On Thursday 3 and Friday 4 October, the eagerly awaited workshops were held by artisan Davide Paoli, who brought his Clessiolab to Via di Pré 129-131r.
Participants had the opportunity to make their own jeans garment or accessory, relying on the guidance of Davide and his team, who provided original materials, professionalism and technique.
An experience dedicated to craftsmanship and sartorial experimentation, which involved the public in a journey through innovative and original techniques.
On Saturday 5 October, history and tradition met the world of art and fashion thanks to Francesco Doria Lamba, who presented the meeting Le Radici del Jeans nella Storia delle Famiglie Genovesi: I Doria Lamba. The public was able to discover the connections between one of Genoa’s most illustrious families and the world’s most popular fabric, with an eye to the future of the young artist who illustrated his own creations and the cultural background that inspired them.
The week ended on Sunday 6 October with the Creative Sewing event, led by fashion designer Eden Embafrash. This workshop highlighted the infinite possibilities of transforming jeans into a unique and sustainable product, thanks to ingenuity and manual skills. Using the fabrics printed at the first workshop on Wednesday, the participants – under the expert guidance of Eden Embafrash and Johanna Wahl – made customised garments and accessories.
Jeanslab thanks all the participants, artists, curators and speakers who contributed to the great success of this week full of creativity and sharing, confirming once again the central role of jeans in Genoese culture and identity.
